Meet the Doula: Kearney J. Szevery
Kearney's introduction to doulas come with the birth of her first child in the summer of 2007. Her husband indicated he desired to look into having a doula at their birth to help him better support her. Having a doula brought them a sense of comfort with all the unknowns involved in childbirth. Through their prenatal discussions with their doula, Kearney and her husband were better able to envision their ideal birth. Reflecting on her experiences, Kearney feels she was empowered by the decisions she made and is grateful they had a doula to assist them on their journey.
In the spring of 2012, Kearney was asked to attend and assist in the birth of her godson. Her friend desired to benefit from Kearney's knowledge and understanding of the birth process as well as her calming presence. Throughout this process, a baby was born, a family was created, and a passion was ignited. Kearney knew becoming a doula was on her horizon.
In the summer of 2013, Kearney had the opportunity to attend a DONA training workshop and began actively promoting her services and accepting clients as she pursued certification. She derives much satisfaction from serving women, helping them be empowered by their birthing experiences and watching as families are transformed.
The fall of 2014, Kearney had the opportunity to attend a Postpartum Doula workshop offered by ProDoula. Eager to add this new set of skills to her offerings, she jumped at the opportunity. Through adding this additional set of skills to her services, Kearney is able to continue assisting families throughout the postpartum transition.
